Frequently Asked Questions

So, what are you doing exactly?

The project is the development of grid-scale pumped hydroelectric power station that will store and generate clean energy on-demand for the Irish electricity grid.

The project capacity is 296MW with a daily storage capacity up to 2,175MWh. This is very much like the existing ESB asset Turlough Hill which has been in operation for 50 years!

Who owns this project?

This project is Irish owned and is being developed by a group of Tipperary-based business people and the company’s staff live locally.

When will it be ready?

Currently in the design and pre planning phase with the target date for construction beginning as early as 2026.

How does it work?

It works by using two water reservoirs at different heights, connected by a piped water way (called the Penstock). Water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir when there is excess electricity. When electricity is needed,  the water is released and flows through the penstock and turbines to produce electricity.

What is a PCI – Project of Common Interest?

Projects of Common Interest (PCI's) are essential infrastructure projects that aim to strengthen the European energy market and help the EU achieve its energy and climate goals. PCI's focus on providing affordable, secure, and sustainable energy for everyone and promoting economic decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement.

Will you still be able to walk in the area?

Yes! The project aims to create new walking loops. We will explore ideas with the community during public consultations.

Are you hiring, and will it create local employment?

Yes, we have already hired staff locally and are working with various local contractors and businesses. Please feel free to contact us.

The project will employ some 400 workers during construction, and throughout its operational phase it is expected to employ as many as 50 employees in the pumped hydro station alone.

There will be other spin-off employment opportunities.
